NEGRONI

The drink that launched a thousand riffs
Whiskey_Sour.jpg

Easy to make and deliciously bitter, the Negroni, has a history that goes back to 1919 Florence. The legend goes that a Count Camillo Negroni asked the bartender at the Caffe Giacosa in Florence to replace the club soda in his Americano with gin. This small substitution birthed a modern classic and a fever-pitched frenzy of riffs and adaptations. The simple one-to-one-to-one recipe of gin, Campari and sweet vermouth has become the basis for a new generation of cocktail experimentation but, how do you make the perfect classic?

As with other simple 3-part cocktail recipes such as the Old Fashioned, selecting the right base ingredients is essential. A Negroni needs a gin-vermouth pairing that elevates the bitter, bold flavors of Campari without taking over. For this recipe, that means just a little extra gin and choosing a gin that will add subtle citrus and juniper.
