BLOOD & SAND
A classic Scotch cocktail finding a modern day renaissance

The Blood & Sand is a classic scotch-based cocktail, first appearing in 1930 in The Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Craddock, and becoming a bar menu mainstay in modern times. It gets its name from the eponymous 1922 bullfighter movie. The “blood” is represented by Heering cherry liqueur, and the “sand” by the orange juice.
This is a cocktail that can easily end up too tart or too sweet. The key is to use a smooth scotch with little smoke and freshly squeezed orange juice, not store-bought.
